ADI Examinations:
To qualify as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), you will need to pass 3 examinations, often referred to as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.
Part 1 - The ADI Theory Test:

  • A computer based examination in two sections, both of which must be passed at the same sitting
  • The multi-choice section has 100 questions
  • Each question has 4 possible answers - touch the computer screen to select the correct answer
  • The time allowed is 90 minutes and the pass mark is 85% overall and 80% in each of 4 subsections
  • The hazard awareness section consists of a series of video clips showing road scenes with developing hazards - click the mouse key to show you have spotted the hazard
  • The pass mark is 57 out of a maximum of 75
  • Both sections of the exam are marked by the computer and the result is given immediately

Part 2 - The Driving Ability Test:

A practical examination in driving ability, similar to an L test, but much more advanced

Lasts about an hour and a quarter

Includes town and country driving, as well as motorways

You will be asked to do the following reversing manoeuvres - turn in the road, reverse into a side road on the left, reverse into a side road on the right, reverse park around a car, or reverse into a parking bay

You will also need to demonstrate an emergency stop

A maximum of 6 minor faults allowed, and no serious or dangerous faults

The examiner will give you the result at the end of the drive

Part 3 - The Instructional Test:

  • A practical examination in instruction ability, where the candidate teaches the examiner as if he or she were a pupil learning to drive
  • Lasts about an hour, divided into 2 phases
  • In the first phase, the examiner will role play the part of a pupil at an early stage in their training
  • You will need to teach your "pupil" a set exercise that they have not done before
  • In the second phase, the examiner will role play a pupil close to test standard
  • Your "pupil" will have some difficulties that you will need to recognise, analyse, and rectify
  • The examiner will give you the result at the end of the examination

Training Programme:
Training For Part 1:
The ADI Part 1 course consists of five seminars, each lasting 2 hours.
The seminars are normally conducted on a one to one, or two to one basis, and give ample opportunity for discussion and participation.
The course objective is to provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge to give a solid framework for your new career as a driving instructor, and to enable you to pass the ADI Part 1 examination.

The five seminars introduce you to the following subjects:

  • Seminar 1 - Introduction, car control and road procedure
  • Seminar 2 - The Highway Code
  • Seminar 3 - Mechanical knowledge
  • Seminar 4 - Licences, theory test, driving test and disabilities
  • Seminar 5 - Starting a business and teaching techniques

Training For Part 2:
Instruction for the ADI Part 2 examination is normally given one to one, in car.
The number of hours required depends on your experience and current standard of driving. The course objective is to build on your driving experience, and to develop your skills and attitude, to enable you to drive with a high degree of safety and confidence, leading to success in the ADI Part 2 examination.
The training concentrates on developing skills in four main areas:

  • Anticipation
  • Awareness
  • Accuracy
  • Assertiveness

Training For Part 3:

Instruction for the ADI Part 3 examination is normally given one to one, in car, although from time to time a fellow trainee may sit in the back, so that you can learn from one another.

The course objective is to impart the techniques required to teach pupils to drive, safely and competently, in today's demanding traffic conditions, so that the pupil develops life skills, habits and attitudes, and to enable you to demonstrate those teaching skills in the ADI Part 3 examination.

The training concentrates on developing skills in three main areas:

  • Teaching techniques
  • Lesson structure
  • Fault identification and correction
