FAQs

Can I take practical lessons before passing my Theory Test?
Yes you can take practical tuition alongside your theory tuition. Your driving instructor is the best person to help you with your theory studies. Some things need to be explained after reading before they can be understood.

Can I sit my Theory Test first?
You must pass your theory test before you can apply for your practical test

Can I sit my Practical Test first?
No, you have to pass the Theory Test before you can apply for the Practical Test

What is the Theory Test?
See the Theory Test page for this information.

What is the Practical Test?
See the Practical Test page for this information.

I understand that you are allowed minor mistakes without failing your Practical Test. How many are you allowed?
A total of 15 minor mistakes will be allowed. However if you make the same mistake 15 times I would not expect the driving examiner to accept that. A minor mistake is what it says, very minor.

What constitutes a minor mistake?
This is a hard question. Any mistake can be minor or serious/dangerous. For example a stall of your engine when moving away from a parked position would be minor providing no other road user was put at risk. However the same mistake when moving out at a junction with approaching traffic would obviously be a serious/dangerous mistake.

I am told that one serious mistake is a failure?
Yes. This means another road user has been inconvenienced or put at risk.

What is a dangerous mistake?
This means another road user has been put in some form of danger.

I am told they only pass so many each day?
This is a nonsense and totally untrue.

What do I have to take with me?
You will need both parts of your signed driving licence, theory certificate and driving test appointment letter. Should you have a paper licence you will need photo identification i.e. passport

How many lessons will I need?
This is a hard question to answer, as each individual is different. However as a rough guide it will take between one hour and one and one-half hours tuition for every year of age. Obviously with practice this can be reduced quite a bit.
